MTS 505 · IMPLEMENTATION WALKTHROUGH
How does a Make to Stock implementation unfold?
Build the MTS operating model around one connected reality: a forecast can drive replenishment, but only executable production and available stock can support a customer promise.
- 01
Discover
Establish the stocking strategy: forecast ownership, service target, inventory-risk appetite, representative materials, plants, channels, and seasonal or lifecycle exceptions. Decide which outcomes matter: stockout, service, excess, ageing, forecast error, or production variance.
Exit evidence: approved MTS scope, material families, demand and inventory owners, service/inventory measures, baseline performance, and known risks.
- 02
Design
Connect the complete MTS chain: forecast/PIR strategy → consumption → MRP → capacity and production → common stock → ATP → fulfilment → Finance hand-offs. Make the forecast, capacity, confirmation, stock-status, and period-end decisions explicit.
Exit evidence: signed process and decision map, strategy and consumption rationale, replenishment and scheduling assumptions, ATP/service policy, stock model, Finance hand-offs, and exception ownership.
- 03
Build & Prove
Configure the smallest complete MTS scenario and run it end to end. Reconcile forecast demand, MRP proposal, capacity/scheduling feasibility, production execution, stock receipt, customer consumption/confirmation, and accounting outcome.
Exit evidence: working representative material/plant, configuration and transport record, connected normal-flow proof, at least one controlled exception, and reconciled demand, stock, production, and finance evidence.
- 04
Validate & Deploy
Test volume and exception behaviour, then prepare the operating data and controls: master data, PIRs, jobs, interfaces, inventory/cutover treatment, roles, monitoring, and go/no-go reconciliation.
Exit evidence: passed volume/exception tests, defect decisions, master-data and PIR readiness, job/interface checks, cutover runbook, opening stock and open-supply reconciliation, and named owners.
- 05
Stabilize & Improve
Operate the MTS feedback loop. Review forecast error, stockouts, excess and ageing, service level, production variance, rescheduling, and parameter corrections; distinguish policy, data, execution, and system causes before changing settings.
Exit evidence: KPI cadence, exception queue and root-cause evidence, approved parameter corrections, support ownership, and a verified first planning/production cycle.
THE CONNECTING CONTROL
Do not promise availability from inventory the business cannot replenish or explain.
The stocking policy must survive forecast release, MRP, capacity/scheduling, production, ATP, fulfilment, cutover, and daily improvement.
Move from implementation evidence into production diagnosis, ownership, and continuous improvement.
