B2A 202 ยท PROJECT SYSTEM ANATOMY

How do Project System objects fit together?

Project System is the execution structure within many Build-to-Asset designs. The project definition frames the initiative; WBS elements control accountable work packages; networks and activities sequence execution; and costs, materials, labour, milestones, and commercial follow-on documents connect at the right level.

READ THE MODEL

Use each object for its distinct job

A project definition is not a cost collector by itself, and a network is not a replacement for a WBS. The model separates governance and responsibility from detailed scheduling and execution, while retaining traceable financial and commercial links.

OBJECT RESPONSIBILITY

Choose the layer that owns the decision

The same capital project can use all of these layers, but each should own a different type of decision.

FRAME

Project definition

Establishes the overall initiative, organisational context, lifecycle status, and project-level defaults.

CONTROL

WBS element

Owns accountable scope, planning, budget, availability control, and many cost or settlement assignments.

EXECUTE

Network & activity

Own the executable sequence, dates, durations, work, components, confirmations, and operational dependencies.

PROVE

Milestone & follow-on documents

Make completion, delivery, billing, capitalisation, or other agreed events visible and traceable.

DIAGNOSTIC EVIDENCE

Start at the object that should have decided

Visible project dates and costs are downstream results. Trace a problem to the object and control that own the rule before changing any later document.

STRUCTURE & BUDGET

Project profile, coding mask, WBS hierarchy, responsible persons, status, plan, budget, availability-control messages, and settlement rules.

SCHEDULE & EXECUTION

Network relationships, activity dates, work centres, confirmations, components, purchase requisitions, purchase orders, and actual cost.

COMMERCIAL & FINANCIAL RESULT

Sales-order and billing-element assignments where used, delivery or billing references, AuC postings, settlement documents, and final-asset evidence.

B2A EXAMPLE

Build one packaging line

The project definition identifies the capital initiative. WBS elements separate civil works, equipment, and commissioning for ownership and budget. Network activities sequence installation, assign technicians, and reserve materials. The project then settles eligible cost to the asset under construction; an SD chain exists only if this is also a customer project.

  • WBS owns approved scope and financial control
  • Activities own detailed execution
  • Milestones make readiness visible
  • Settlement creates the B2A financial outcome
