FP&A 404 · SOLUTION WORKBENCH
FP&A Solution Workbench
Build the smallest planning solution that can take one governed actual result, collect accountable drivers, create a forecast and scenario, explain movement, support approval, and retain a decision trail.
FP&A is not automatically an SAP configuration workstream. The solution may use SAP Analytics Cloud, S/4HANA planning integration, other SAP products, or approved non-SAP tools. Product selection, licenses, connections, and data residency require a separate approved architecture decision.
FP&A WORKBENCH
Decision and KPI contract
Define the recurring decisions, consumers, measures, drivers, horizons, materiality, cadence, and success criteria before designing screens.
Design and test in this order
- Confirm business purpose, owner, scope, materiality, and product/release boundary.
- Define the data, model, calculation, workflow, security, and reporting behavior required for this chapter.
- Build one representative positive case plus a material exception, correction, and approval path.
- Reconcile the result and record the evidence before extending dimensions, entities, or automation.
A visually polished model that cannot state its decision, owner, definition, or action.
FP&A WORKBENCH
Data and master-data contract
Map actuals, plans, dimensions, hierarchies, currencies, calendars, units, operational drivers, transformations, and reconciliation ownership.
Totals match only after unexplained manual adjustments or incompatible grains are blended.
FP&A WORKBENCH
Planning model and versions
Design measures or accounts, dimensions, time, currencies, public and private versions, planning areas, data locking, and valid combinations.
Versions overwrite one another, planners see the wrong slice, or invalid combinations accept data.
FP&A WORKBENCH
Drivers, calculations, and scenarios
Implement transparent driver logic, allocations, data actions, multi actions, currency conversion, sensitivities, and scenario calculations.
A calculation runs successfully but double counts, ignores constraints, or cannot be explained by Finance.
FP&A WORKBENCH
Workflow, security, and publication
Assign planners and reviewers, calendar tasks, deadlines, data access, input controls, submission, approval, locking, and version publication.
Users can edit outside their responsibility, publish without approval, or cannot see the context needed to plan.
FP&A WORKBENCH
Stories, analysis, and decisions
Build input views, management scorecards, variance bridges, forecast movement, scenarios, commentary, actions, and drill-down.
The report is comprehensive but obscures material issues, mixes versions, or ends without a recommendation.
FP&A WORKBENCH
Integration and operation
Design source loads, optional write-back, schedules, monitoring, error recovery, transport or deployment, support, retention, and change control.
Interfaces fail silently, reruns duplicate data, write-back is unreconciled, or model changes bypass testing.
VERTICAL-SLICE PROOF
One controlled revenue and margin forecast
Use one entity, product group, customer channel, currency, and six future periods. Keep the slice small enough to reconcile line by line.
- 01Load and reconcile
Load closed actual revenue, units, price, COGS, and margin with master data and prove the source total.
- 02Plan and forecast
Seed a forecast, enter controlled volume, price, mix, cost, and currency assumptions, then calculate the integrated result.
- 03Challenge and approve
Run downside and upside cases, record commentary, reject an invalid submission, and publish the approved version.
- 04Report and trace
Reconcile forecast movement, show margin sensitivity, drill to inputs, and retain the decision and action owner.
