EWM 202 ยท HANDLING UNITS & PACKING

How do handling units and packing preserve physical identity?

A handling unit represents physical packaging; stock identity is still carried by product, quantity, stock attributes, and location. Packing, repacking, staging, and loading must preserve both views of warehouse truth.

THE DECISION

What moved: product stock, the handling unit, or both?

Do not assume a pallet, carton, and quant are interchangeable. One handling unit can contain multiple products; one product can be split across many handling units and bins. The work instruction must identify the intended physical and stock outcome.

01IDENTIFY

Build or receive the HU

Record packaging, contents, quantity, owner, stock attributes, and relevant reference.

02PACK

Change physical grouping

Pack, unpack, or repack while retaining the correct product and quantity evidence.

03MOVE

Confirm warehouse work

Move stock, HU, or both to the determined bin, staging area, or loading point.

04HAND OFF

Prove the outbound or inbound result

Reconcile HU, product, quantity, task, delivery, and goods issue or receipt evidence.

WAREHOUSE MOMENT

Picked stock is packed into the wrong handling unit

Do not fix only a label. Trace the picked quantity, source and destination bins, HU contents, task confirmation, staging status, and delivery. Correct the first physical or EWM discrepancy, then prove the shipment evidence agrees.

  • Product and packaging identity agree
  • Task and HU confirmation agree
  • Staging and delivery evidence agree
